Synopsis:
Frozen meets Mad Max in this epic teen fantasy duology bursting with star-crossed romance, immortal heroines, and elemental magic, perfect for fans of Furyborn.

Generations of twin goddesses have long ruled Aeon. But seventeen years ago, one sister’s betrayal defied an ancient prophecy and split their world in two. The planet ceased to spin, and a Great Abyss now divides two realms: one cloaked in perpetual night, the other scorched by an unrelenting sun.

While one sister rules Aranth—a frozen city surrounded by a storm-wracked sea —her twin inhabits the sand-locked Golden City. Each goddess has raised a daughter, and each keeps her own secrets about her sister’s betrayal.

But when shadowy forces begin to call their daughters, Odessa and Haidee, back to the site of the Breaking, the two young goddesses —along with a powerful healer from Aranth, and a mouthy desert scavenger —set out on separate journeys across treacherous wastelands, desperate to heal their broken world. No matter the sacrifice it demands.

My Rating:

My Thoughts:
This was a pleasant surprise. I have Rin Chupeco's other books, but have yet to get into them. I was super excited for this read and I'm glad I gave it a chance. This was a good start to a new duology. This was steeped in equal amount of action and humor with a dash of romance. I loved the characters and I'm glad there were four different viewpoints. I gave this a 4 star rating because the characters started to "sound" alike as I kept reading. I will also say I was a bit confused by the magic system every so often.

This book alternates perspectives in such a funny way. Each title starts with the characters name, followed a title that will most likely make you life.

Both Aranth and Golden City are interesting cities. Both are dying due to the abyss which happened during the breaking. Aranth is stuck eternal darkness steeped in cold. Golden City is stuck in eternal day beat with heat. Both are on Aeon which has stopped turning. I love that we get to see the difference between having a world stuck in cold weather and a world stuck in heat. They both are suffering due to their world dying. I enjoyed both cities.

My favorite character is Tianlan who is a Catseye from Aranth. She's snarky, rude, mean, and badass! I loved any scene I saw her in. She was a strong heroine from beginning to end. I love that she was open with her sexuality. She was broken from past sitaution with her former team. She had to deal with a lot of things emotionally, so being able to see her let go and move forward was amazing. She's definitely a leader in all sense. She cracked me up from beginning to end. Her comments, her thoughts. She was EVERYTHING to me!

Odessa, the goddess of Aranth, is chronically ill. Darkness is in her body and can't be removed. Odessa is the daughter of the goddess Asteria. Odessa reminded me of a golden retriever in that she was adorable from start to finish. She was a lesbian

Arjun is a rebel from Golden City from a tribe that cannot stand the sun goddess or her relatives. He acts super tough, but he's more of a kind-hearted young boy. I loved watching him plot to kill and then fall for Haidee. His boldness was amazing.

Haidee, the goddess of Golden City,  is mechanic nerd. She's the daughter of goddess Latona. She's the type that wants to be free. I enjoyed her humor, but like Odessa I didn't care too much for her. I did like her quick remarks though, especially when speaking to Arjun.

The romance was adorable to read. It wasn't super heavy, but when it did come up it made you swoon for the couples. Both couples suited one another so well. I swooned each turn of the page.

The whole ordeal with Latona and Asteria is insane! I need answers. Some were given, but I'm still at a total lost. I love that Rin kept me on my toes trying to figure out truths and lies. I'm over Asteria honestly, but I'm hopeful for this crazy family of goddess.

That ending -- oh my! The darkness. The traitor. I'm excited to read the sequel when it comes out. Definitely plan to re-read this next year so that I can get a better understanding of the magic before the release of the sequel.
