Synopsis:
Bestselling author Katie McGarry’s trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.

They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.

The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.

A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she's psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

My Rating:

My Thoughts:
This was a beautiful story. I am a fan of Katie McGarry's writing. It's always bittersweet. She weaves real life problems with trauma into sweet romances and friendships. I loved that this book included a bit of faith and fantasy aspects.

Scarlett is a girl of strength. She dealt with betrayal and heartbreak with friends and family. I loved the strength she had when dealing with all of that. She pretended to be bold, but was very reserved. She had her moments of being whiny, but I loved her growth as a character. She handled life as best as a 17 year old could.

Jesse was awesome! He also dealt with betrayal and tragedy within his family. He seems like a rough, bad-boy to outsiders, but he is much more kind and sweet. He was very closed off but knew how to still be outgoing. He was a brave guy. I loved him!

The romance was everything to me. Friends who had a crush on one another, but fall apart only to be reconnected. Second chance romance! The relationship between Scarlett and Jesse was amazing. From angry enemies to love. I enjoyed seeing them hang together and defy the world. They were just so cute!

Glory, Jesse's cousin, was awesome! She got on my nerve sometimes, but she was very important to the growth of Scarlett and Jesse. I loved her psychic abilities as well. Pastor Huges was freaking awesome! I loved the advice he gave to both of them. I loved his view on life. Mr. and Mrs. Copeland were sickening to me. Mr. Copeland uses his past to excuse his foolishness. Mrs. Copeland accepts foolishness out of stupidity. Both were terrible parents in my opinion. I hated them!!

The friendships were pretty great. Scarlett and Jesse's friends all seemed superficial to me at first, but as the story progressed I began to enjoy them. I loved Jesse's friends more because they were true to themselves and didn't care too much about appearances. They knew they were flawed and "broken" and accepted it. Naz, Leo and V were amazing. As for Scarlett's two best-friends -- I didn't care as much for them.

Overall, I TOTALLY recommend this book! It's easy to get through and pulls you in from start to finish.
