Synopsis:
Echoes Between Us is bestselling author Katie McGarry’s breakout teen contemporary novel about a girl with everything to lose and the boy who will do anything to save her.

Veronica sees ghosts. More specifically, her mother's ghost. The afterimages of blinding migraines caused by the brain tumor that keeps her on the fringes and consumes her whole life haunt her, even as she wonders if it's something more...

Golden boy Sawyer is handsome and popular, a state champion swimmer, but his adrenaline addiction draws him to Veronica.

A girl with nothing to live for and a boy with everything to lose--can they conquer their demons together?

My Rating:

My Thoughts:
This was by far a shockingly good story. I always go into contemporaries with out much of an expectation. Granted, I do find that I love Katie McGarry's writing and how she writes YA contemporaries. This story was real with the issues it focused, relatable with the family dynamics, heart-wrenching with how real it is and funny with the banter.

Veronica is a girl who tries hard to enjoy life and can see ghosts. She also has a brain tumor that causes severe migranes. Veronica is a such a strong yet vulnerable character. She knew how things would have ended, but she still looked to enjoy her life as best as she could. She was funny, very loyal, loving and smart. She was seen as a misfit which she didn't care for much. She lived for herself while still being bound to her mother's death.

Sawyer is the popular guy that every girl wants to date and every guy wants to be friends with. He's a great swimmer and very loving towards his family. I enjoyed him SO much! He does have an addiction to adrenaline -- he loves to JUMP. He's treated as a charity case by many in his circle because he has dyslexia. Sawyer is a guy with a huge heart that takes on too much. He also holds a grudge against his father while covering for his mother's stupidity.

The romance was E V E R Y T H I N G to me. It was pure, adorable and realatable (I said it again). They started off being enemies and slowly grew to friends and then built a relationship. I adored their cute, flirty banter. I loved how real they were with one another. They grow through having to be English project partners. They mesh together. They slowly acknowledge their feelings and grow to truly love one another through the good and the bad.

Leo was a friend of Veronica's that she loved. He also loved her, but his fear of her tumor caused him to be a major dick. I couldn't stand how protective and annoying he was toward her. He pissed me off! Lucy is Sawyer baby sister and she was so damn cute! Loved her. Glory was a friend of Veronica but also helped her deal with the spirits inside her house. I enjoyed her a bit.

Sylvia was Sawyer's friend and she irritated me. I loved that she was a lesbian, but I hated how her parents made her feel. I also disliked how annoying she got when Sawyer started hanging with Veronica. Sawyer's parents were interesting. His mother was terrible. She was irresponsible, liked to put on act for appearances and had an issue with alcohol. She just pissed me off from beginning to end. His father could have done a better job at getting to chat with him and Lucy. Veronica's father was such an amazing father. He was a truck driver, but he was all about loving his daughter, being there for her in her struggle and working hard to provide. He was an awesome man!

Overall, this took me on a rollercoaster and I definitely plan to re-read and annotate my ARC copy. Beautiful from beginning to end.
