Continue the Frith Chronicles with the second book, Dread Pirate Arcanist!
While protecting the newborn griffins on the Isle of Landin, Volke Savan and his adopted sister, Illia, run afoul of the Dread Pirate Calisto, the same cutthroat who carved out Illia's right eye. As a master manticore arcanist, Calisto's strength and brutality are unrivaled, so when Illia suggests they bring him to justice, Volke wonders if they'll have what it takes to fight the corsairs on the high seas.
A fast-paced flintlock fantasy for those who enjoy How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, Unsouled (Cradle Series) by Will Wight, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.
My Rating:
My Thoughts:
This was just as action packed as the first book. If you thought Ruma was something, wait until you read about the pirate Calisto. He was just as crazy and insane as Ruma was. The world building as usual was pretty good that I felt engrossed in it. The writing always pulls me easily and the entire Frith Guild makes me laugh. They are such a phenomenal guild with such phenomenal people and values.
Volke (knightmare arcanist) and Luthair (knightmare eldrin) are back at it once again, but on sea. Volke is still learning to handle his magic and abilities. Luthair is still a sarcastic, yet helpful eldrin. As a team, they are awesome together. They help one another grow. I love seeing them fight together and argue among one other. They way they grew in this novel was insane! I will forever be a fan of those two!
Illia and her eldrin Nicholin are still a comical set. When you need some comedy in the midst of drama Nicholin is normally the one to give it. This story centered more so around her due to her previous issues with the pirates. I loved seeing both her strength and vulnerability in this story. It showed more of her heart and courage.
Master Zelfree is freaking awesome! He seems like a drunken fool, but he is much more than that. I love how he works with his mimic eldrin. His mind is so interesting to see, especially when he looks like an idiot. He trains the apprentices well. Zaxis, Atty, Adelgis and Hexa are all awesome though Zaxis annoys me with his attitude and Atty still acts like a vixen.
Pirate Calisto is seriously a crazy man. His values and outlook on life and eldrin are twisted. He was a powerful man and did some seriously shady things. The way he fought was dirty as well, but he knew how to handle himself and his "crew" of psychos. He was a better villain than Ruma.
I'm excited to see where this story goes in the next and how the apprentices and eldrin grow as a team under Master Zelfree's leadership and tutelage. I want more action, more magic and more awesome fight scenes. A great fast paced novel for an easy two day read. I definitely plan to read more work from Shami Stovall!
