"They killed me, but I survived.”

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z’s Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine--even darker secrets than her own.

Review

This was  my first time reading anything from Jamie McGuire. I own all of her books, but have yet to dive in. For my first read I was impressed. Apolonia is a sci-fi romance novel that takes an interesting take on Aliens and Egyptians. It was not a disappoint me. This received a 4.5 stars from me!

Rory was killed, but she didn't die, she lived and moved on with her life while her family and bestfriend were gone. She attends college and works as an assistant for Dr. Zorba. Dr. Zorba worked with her father so she decided to do the same. In the midst of working and attending classes she came across two different, yet wonderful guys: Benji and Cyrus. Rory was a fabulous character for me. She looks innocent and sweet, but has her own tricks up her sleeve. She can kick-ass like a pro, she's intelligent and she's also brave through all she has been through. Benji loved Rory for two years, Cyrus knew a ton about the rock that he and Rory had to help Dr. Zorba research. That's when things took off.

Dr. Zorba was a hilarious old man. He was smart and very wise. I enjoyed his character because he was the one constant in Rory's life. He knew her family and decided to take the "role" of her father when they died.

Benji was an interesting character. He was a pure hunk, but at the same time and douche-bag. He was so into Rory that I found nothing wrong with it until things got a bit strange with him stalking her. His feelings for Rory were real, but finding out who he got me upset. It added a great twist to the story, but I wanted to jump through the pages and beat him up. He was such a gentleman to Rory. I had a love hate relationship with him.

Cyrus was the dream guy in my opinion. He was kind mysterious in his own way as a "transfer" student. Him being Egyptian was super hot to me. Cyrus was very unique to this story in knowing more about the rock and being from a different world. I still didn't understand if he was an alien, a god or really an Egyptian. I just didn't know.

Apolonia was a fierce woman. She was bold and in love. At first I didn't like her because she was obsessively rude to Rory, but as the story went on and the action picked up she became a favorite character.

The ending was absolutely perfect. I love how everyone sacrificed themselves to save the human race. It was perfection for me.

Although the novel was amazing I am not quite sure why it's called Apolonia. Not much occurred with Apolonia so I think a new title should have been used. Overall, this was a fabulous read and I definitely plan to read more from Jamie McGuire.
